RECAP

CAN YOU SAY, “ROLL WITH THE CHANGES.”

Monday arrivals had a beautiful “spring day” to drive up to the Harbor Springs area to settle in for the week. There were a couple of folks who got some early runs in at the Nubs Nob ski area. Wow! were they busy! Apparently, there was a state high school competition racing going on that day as well. The parking lots were jammed with cars! Great to see all the action.

Later that afternoon there was a get together so all attendees could get to know each other. There was much laughter along with the yummy cheeses and crackers, venison salami and some warm spiced wines.

Tuesday morning, we were greeted with another “spring day” to ski. Nubs Nob did a great job of grooming the runs overnight so the morning skiing was quite good. There was a base of 36”. The afternoon temp rose to the low 60’s and the snow softened in the afternoon. The Side Door Saloon welcomed our group that evening. Changes were coming!

Wednesday – Did I say changes?!?! It’s 18 degrees outside and 40 mph winds this morning. 40+ degrees difference from the previous day! It had rained hard with thunderstorms overnight (I did not hear anything) and then turned to below freezing temps. Nubs had tried to make some snow when temps allowed, but the slopes had icy spots, with gatherings of blowing and swirling snow, which made for some tough skiing. There were times that it was difficult to see the top of the lifts with diminished visibility. There were a few who managed to find some good skiing at Pintail Peak area, which had been groomed and was less windy. Some decided to quit early and go explore the local area. Later that evening we all gathered for our scrumptious pizza party. Lots of laughter and fun stories, as we filled up on awesome pizzas.

Thursday, another change from the previous day. The wind had diminished considerably, but the cold, below 20 degrees, temps had arrived. Nubs Nob had made new snow overnight and the runs had been groomed. Skiing was fun for all with late morning and afternoon sunshine helping to ward off the chilly temps. That evening we gathered at The New York restaurant in Harbor Spring for a wonderful lengthy dinner. You must try their warm cherry bread pudding that had been soaked in rum and served warm. Rave reviews from many of us who chose that

as their dessert.

Friday was departure morning. After a leisurely breakfast, provided each morning by our Best Western Host, many of us packed up for our return trip to our homes. Sarah R. and Carol B. had some passes to ski at Crystal Mountain, so they decided to stop there on their way home and get some runs in there as well. Another great sunny day to enjoy.

Hope to see all again next year for this fun filled, low cost, northern Michigan Ski adventure.
