BCSC Whitefish Montana Ski Trip Report -
January 25 - Feburary 01, 2020
Upon arriving at Glacier International Airport in Kalispell, we were greeted by our hosts from The Lodge at Whitefish Lake. They assisted us with loading baggage onto the shuttle for a quick trip to the town of Whitefish. Our belongings were promptly delivered to our rooms for and early check-in. Following lunch in the lounge , we were treated to a reception with beverages and a presentation by representatives from our hotel, the ski school, a rental shop, the Mountain Ambassadors, and more.
We gathered each morning for a cozy group breakfast. After retrieving our skis from our very own ski valet, we boarded the 8:30 am shuttle right from our door to the base lodge at the mountain.
Whitefish Mountain Resort has a reputation for fog, but with fog came great snow that offered very skiable terrain for all of us. The Mountain Ambassador Tour Guides quickly orientated us to the lay of land. The first day was an “inversion” day which created a cloudy blanket over Flathead Valley while keeping the mountain tops clear. Many days were indeed foggy until dropping into the backside of the mountain for better visibility. We had one full day of glorious sunshine with views of Glacier National park including the snowy peaks of the Canadian Rockies.
As we neared the summit on Chair One, “snowghosts” flanked both sides of the lift transporting us into a magical winter wonderland palace. Whitefish is famous for “snowghosts” which are created by a combination fo super cooled water droplets, wind, clouds, and fog near ridge top obstacles such as trees and lift towers.
During the week, several of us seized the opportunity to improve our skiing/boarding skills with the very fine instructors from the Ski & Ride School. We now have more confident skiers, new snowboarders, and more daring tree skiers.
We greatly enjoyed the gatherings in the outdoor hot tub overlooking Whitefish Lake, excellent cuisine in the sparkly town of Whitefish, apre`s ski at Hellroaring Saloon, lunches on the mountain, and the convenience of the Lodge at Whitefish Lake for drinks and dinners. Also on the agenda was a spa “re-boot” to ease our achy feet with a $10 ten minute foot massage and PBR tall boy.
Thursday dinner included an opportunity to share photos and vote for the best photo of the week. We had two runner’s up with incredible scenery photos. The winner captured “Sasquatch Skier of Whitefish.”
